Every great sauce has a story — and ours begins in a small kitchen with a big idea.
Colleen Flowers Toerien always believed that food should do more than just taste good. It should nourish the body, spark joy at the table, and bring people closer together. In 2017, she started experimenting with recipes that honoured tradition but broke the rules of convention: no added sugar, no gluten, no preservatives, no seed oils — only fresh, honest ingredients from local organic farmers.
What started as a few bottles of handmade chilli sauce sold from her office desk and at farmers’ market quickly caught on. Shoppers loved the clean, vibrant flavours and the fact that these sauces could do it all: pour them over a salad, use them as a marinade, stir them into a curry, or dip into them straight from the jar. Word spread, and Colleen’s Handmade Sauces grew from a passion project into a trusted brand with 14 flavours and now stocked in dozens of stores, private labels, restaurants, and homes across South Africa — and even beyond.
Among the range is a true innovation: Maca-nnaise, a silky, plant-based mayonnaise made from organic cold-pressed macadamia oil. It’s the first of its kind in South Africa and represents what Colleen’s Handmade Sauces is all about — reimagining everyday condiments with creativity, health, and sustainability at the heart.
At its core, Colleen’s Handmade Sauces is still what it was on day one: a labour of love, made for people who believe that food should be as real as the memories made around the table.
